Recently we got permission to detect around this old Dog Trot House. I found two old buttons
in front of the house between the porch and big tree as seen in the picture.

This Australian Penny was found around another old East Texas House place. I assume the previous
owner who lived here may have been stationed in Australia or taken leave in Australia during
WWII and brought this coin back to the states with them. The coin is minted from brass and is about
the same size as the US Kennedy half dollar coin.

Our latest adventure to High Island and Galveston, Texas June 2004.

State Highway 87 between Sabine Pass and High Island, locally known as "the beach road,"
has existed as a transportation route for more than a century. As far back as 1863, a Civil War
map showed a "Road to Galveston" along the shoreline southwest of Sabine Pass. Since then, the
road has been damaged by storms and repaired many times. Hurricane Jerry damaged the road in October 1989 at which time the road was closed indefinitely. Currently, large portions of the roadway are damaged and sections of the former right-of-way are within the tidal zone. High Island, Texas derives its name by the fact that it is situated on a salt dome which makes it the highest point above sea level along the Texas gulf coast. Today High Island is a small coastal town about 45 miles East of Galveston, Texas. Because of it's elevation above sea level it was a natural land mark and navigation aid to mariners in centuries past. Legend has it that many ships have run a ground and sunk on the sand bars just off shore of High Island and that after major hurricanes and strong storms and tides, gold and silver coins can be found along the shoreline. Well, that was enough for me. A weekend at the beach, sun and fun and a chance to run across a gold or silver coin on the beach. Plus it didn't take much arm twisting to talk Suzanne into going with me, (but it might take more next time). |
